Neurodiversity and mental health

The mental health of students with neurodivergent traits is something that we here at The CODE take seriously. There are techniques and methods which we can adopt, to help us stand strong against the struggles of life, and take back agency over our problems. We can’t control what we feel, and what we think, but we can control how we respond and react to those thoughts and emotions.

What techniques can we use to practice wellbeing?

“Mindfulness” is the practice of grounding ourselves in the present, and immersing ourselves at the moment-by-moment passing of the current instant. Other examples of calming activities include meditation, yoga and breathing exercises which all help us to regulate our executive functions and better equip ourselves to deal with the inevitable struggles that we will face with confidence.

Other techniques to improve mental health include regular walks in nature, engaging in social activities and ensuring that there are times set aside as a household to reflect on challenges and achievements in the day. By creating a space to discuss feelings and express gratitude you are not only giving young people emotional literacy but also the space to express themselves and process emotions.

Spending time in nature or bringing nature into everyday life has been scientifically proven to benefit both the mental and physical wellbeing of the neurodiverse. Research into ecotherapy has shown that nature reduces feelings of stress, calms the mind, improves our mood, and helps us to feel more relaxed.

What activities can we do involving nature to practice self care?

  • Hang a bird feeder outside a window. If there's space, you could build a small wooden nesting box on a tree or under a windowsill.

  • Eat meals outdoors. Have a picnic in a local park, or simply sit in a garden. This might be something you could enjoy doing with other people!

  • Build an animal habitat, for example, build a hedgehog house, a bug hotel or create a plant pot!

  • Bring nature inside to decorate your living space by collecting natural materials like leaves, flowers and feathers!
